Know your Baby Monitor is Safe & Secure

Hush little baby, don’t say a word, unless your baby monitor is well-secured.

Let’s Talk About How WiFi Baby Monitors Work

Credentials

“Credentials” are the unique username and password that you use to access your email, your FB, and hopefully your baby monitor. Have you ever set up a device where the sticker on the back said “Username: Admin” and “Password: Admin”? Those are easy to remember and easy to type in, but they mean that anyone can type in the same credentials and access your device!

Backdoors

One of the most common weaknesses that allows an attacker to take over a baby monitor is if the baby monitor ships with programs that are open to the internet but are insufficiently protected. Sometimes these programs might be part of the way the baby monitor is meant to work and other times were only meant for the research and development phase.

Encryption

Encryption protects against the eavesdroppers. Even if attackers can’t directly access your baby monitor they might be able to listen to the data that the monitor exchanges with servers or your smartphone and copy it. If that data is not encrypted, or encrypted badly, it can be used to reconstruct what you were looking at on your phone. The app should encrypt its connections too.

WiFi Baby Monitor

WiFi baby monitors give parents a very extended range. With older monitors using DECT or Bluetooth technology, your baby monitor is going to have limited range. With WiFi technology, you can basically check in on your baby from anywhere you have a connection.

Does your wifi baby monitor have default credentials?

Attackers love it when manufacturers ship baby monitors and other devices with all the same username and password. They can often use those same credentials to log in to your device from over the Internet. They might use your device as a platform for their own purposes, or even spy on you and your family. Make sure that your devices don’t ship with guessable credentials.

Evoz DOES NOT use default credentials.

Does your wifi baby monitor run extra programs?
Another attacker favorite is when manufacturers forget to clear all their test and development components before you buy the device. These backdoors need to be easily accessed at the factory, but what if they’re running on the device in your home? Manufacturers need to make sure all their backdoors are blocked off when the device leaves their hands.

Evoz DOES NOT have backdoors.
Does your wifi baby monitor use encryption?

When information flows over the Internet, other people can hear it. Fortunately, if that data is encrypted then all they hear is gibberish. That’s why every connection between your baby monitor, any cloud servers, and the smartphone apps have to be encrypted. If they’re not, eavesdroppers could listen in and pick up your password, or the stream from the baby monitor itself.

Evoz USES secure encryption.
